How we teach it
The frame is a stage, not the destination. Once a child can move beads accurately, we take the abacus away and ask them to picture it. That mental image is what makes the arithmetic fast — and it is also why abacus practice tends to improve concentration generally.
We assess every child before we place them, so they start in the right place.
